A nonprofit pharmacy that ships prescription medications to your door completely free. For NC residents with no insurance and household income under 300% of the poverty level. Enrollment lasts a year and there's no fee to apply.
Who it's for: Uninsured NC residents — especially anyone managing diabetes, heart disease, asthma, or other chronic conditions.
Mark Cuban's online pharmacy sells nearly 1,000 generic medications at true cost plus a flat 15% markup, $3 pharmacy fee, and ~$5 shipping — the price math is printed right on every listing. Many common generics cost a few dollars a month.
Good to know: Generics only — no insulin or refrigerated meds, and no controlled substances. Works with or without insurance.
Free coupons that often beat your insurance copay at local pharmacies — including the ones right here in Elkin, Dobson, and Mount Airy. Compare prices at every pharmacy near you, show the coupon on your phone at pickup.
Pro tip: Check GoodRx even if you have insurance — the coupon price is sometimes lower than your copay. Just ask the pharmacist to compare.
A nonprofit database of manufacturer patient assistance programs — the programs where drug makers give brand-name medications free or nearly free to families who qualify. If you take an expensive brand-name drug, look it up here first.
Who it's for: Anyone on a costly brand-name medication, insured or not. Most people have no idea these programs exist.
Medicare caps insulin at $35/month, and the three major makers — Lilly, Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi — each run their own $35/month cap programs for most everyone else, insured or uninsured. If you're paying hundreds for insulin, call your maker's savings program this week.
How to start: Search "[your insulin brand] savings program" or ask your pharmacist which manufacturer program covers your insulin.
The pharmaceutical industry's own search engine for finding assistance on your specific medication. Heads up: it moved to AmericasMedicines.com in 2026 — the old medicineassistancetool.org address no longer loads reliably.
Who it's for: A second place to check after NeedyMeds for brand-name drug help.
Surry County winters are no joke, and this past one was brutal on bills. These programs exist exactly for this — and your county DSS is the front door for the first two.
A once-per-winter payment sent straight to your heating provider. Mark your calendar: households with someone 60+ or disabled apply starting in early December; everyone else from January 2 to March 31 — or until the money runs out, so apply early.
How to apply: Online at ePASS, or through your county DSS by phone or in person. Surry DSS: (336) 401-8700.
Got a final notice or disconnection warning? CIP is year-round emergency help — up to $600 per crisis paid toward the bill that's threatening your heat or cooling. Bring your past-due bill to your county DSS.
Who it's for: Households under 150% of the poverty level facing a heating/cooling emergency. Don't wait for the power to go off — a final notice is enough to apply.
Duke Energy customers can get help with bills, deposits, and reconnection fees through more than 100 partner agencies across NC — over $1 million already distributed in 2026. Use their Payment Assistance Finder to see which local agency handles your area.
Bonus: Their Operation Fan Heat Relief gives free fans to qualifying seniors and adults with disabilities each summer — ask your local Area Agency on Aging.
Right on North Bridge Street in Elkin — a few blocks from our office. They help with electric, water, and heating bills, plus medication and clothing vouchers, for families in the Elkin, Jonesville, Dobson, State Road, and Ronda areas.
Hours: Mon 1–4pm, Wed & Fri 9am–12pm. They serve the first 20 clients each day, so arrive early — and at least 30 minutes before closing.
Between food pantries and SNAP, no family in our area should skip meals. These are the fastest ways to find food this week.
Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC serves 18 counties including Surry, Yadkin, and Wilkes. Type your zip code into their Food Finder and see every partner pantry, soup kitchen, and meal program near you. Call the pantry first to confirm hours.
Who it's for: Anyone. Pantries don't ask for much — usually just where you live.
North Carolina's food assistance (what most folks call food stamps) loads money onto an EBT card monthly for groceries. Many working families qualify and don't realize it — especially after hours get cut or a job change. Apply online in about 30 minutes.

Two big directories that cover everything — food, rent, childcare, transportation, counseling. FindHelp searches by zip code; NC 211 is a free 24/7 phone line (dial 2-1-1) with real people who speak English and Spanish.

A free primary-care clinic on Rockford Street in Mount Airy for Surry County neighbors with no insurance and limited income. In-house pharmacy, diabetes care, physical therapy, and emergency dental. First come, first served — folks line up before opening.
Who it's for: Uninsured, low-income Surry County area residents. Call first to confirm current clinic hours.
North Carolina's Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program gives free, unbiased one-on-one Medicare help — when to enroll, comparing drug plans, reading statements. Trained counselors in every NC county, and they sell nothing.
Who it's for: Anyone turning 65, on Medicare, or helping a parent sort through plan choices. (Yes — we're an insurance agency telling you about a free alternative. It's genuinely good.)
Federally trained navigators who help you shop HealthCare.gov plans, figure out financial assistance, and enroll — free, unbiased, one-on-one, in English or Spanish. Led by Legal Aid of North Carolina.
Who it's for: Anyone without job-based coverage. Many families are shocked how low the subsidized premiums can be.
Since NC expanded Medicaid, hundreds of thousands of working adults who never qualified before now do — even without kids at home. There's no enrollment season; you can apply any day of the year.

The federal ACP discount ended in 2024 — anyone still promising you a "$30 government internet credit" is out of date or a scam. But these are real, today:
About $25/month for 50 Mbps — plenty for schoolwork, streaming, and telehealth. Qualify through the school lunch program (many local schools qualify every student automatically) or SSI for those 65+.
Around $30/month for qualifying households (SNAP, SSI, or income-based), with speeds up to 100 Mbps where AT&T fiber reaches. Availability varies by address in our area, so check yours.
The one federal discount that survived: up to $9.25/month off phone or internet service for households on SNAP, Medicaid, or SSI. It stacks with the provider plans on the left.

If anyone ever asks you to pay a fee to "unlock" government assistance or unclaimed money, walk away — that's a scam.
No. Applying for LIEAP, SNAP, Medicaid, food pantry help, or prescription assistance does not appear on your credit report and has no effect on your auto or home insurance rates.
Start with the ones that have no income limits: search NCCash.gov for unclaimed money, check GoodRx and Cost Plus Drugs for cheaper prescriptions, and call SHIIP if you're near Medicare age. Those four help households at every income level.
